Applying fresh paint to your interior door trim can boost the overall look of a room, especially if you're choosing a new wall color. This task requires some time and care but can be done within a day as long as you have the right tools and paints.
To do it yourself, here are the essentials:
Fine-grit sanding block or 220-grit sandpaper (to prep the surface) Cleaning solution like TSP or mild dish soap Old cloth, sheets, or drop cloth Painter’s tape
All the items except painter’s tape are required for painting any spaces in your home. For the paint itself, go with a low-VOC that can be washed and is intended for high-humidity areas.
Select a small, angled brush that’s about two inches wide. For larger areas, a foam roller will also work. You may have the option of a primer as well.
First, sand the trim lightly so the wood grain opens up and is easier for the paint to grasp. Clean up the remnants & let it dry thoroughly.
Next, Add a thin coat of primer . Allow 30-45 minutes's drying time before painting the trim. Use short brush strokes and feather the edges lightly so they don’t get mixed with the trim paint when you’re adding paint.
Time to paint: Using long even strokes, get your first paint coat on the trim. You should let that dry for circa two hours before applying more paint if needed. Lightly sand between coats so the next coat adheres to a smooth surface without bumps.
Using a low-VOC paint is particularly beneficial in Florida’s humid climate. Regular paints may chip or fade, while a quality paint will maintain pigmentation and gloss longer.
Low-VOC is your friend because it contains zero/brown or grey solvents that reduce interior air pollution. Heavy-duty washing will also ensure the surface is cleaned without affecting the strength of the finished paint. It’s easier to clean your interior surfaces or door trim than trek back to physical stores each time.
If the trim appears warped, split, or is part of a door that’s load-bearing, it’s time to contact a carpenter or general contractor to help. If the frame is damaged, it’s best to get structural help. Simply repainting worn paint can be completed by the homeowner.
You’ll feel accomplished when your fresh design is broadly within reach.
