Quick, handyman‑safe steps to tighten hinges, replace weatherstripping, and reinforce the latch on your interior storm door before a tropical wave hits Florida.

A Tropical Storm warning has been issued for Florida, but that doesn't always mean the strongest winds will actually hit your area. Even if a storm is flying past out to sea, your door may experience gusts that could loosen door frames, hinges, and other hardware.

What steps are necessary to reinforce a storm door in a single day?

Look closely at your storm door's screws and hardware. Then identify the parts you’ll need before heading out to the hardware store. The first step is to make sure that your door closes smoothly. Pull your door half shut; if you feel any binding, some of the screws in your hinges might be loose. Adjust them as needed, then tighten them down to the proper torque if you have the kit. Check the latch as well. Close the door and tug on the other side. If it gives, it may not be secured enough to the frame. Replacing the plate can help, or just adding Metal plates to the hinge sections.

Can I replace my door weatherstripping and hinges, too?

Very likely! You'll need new weather stripping and screws, but it's probably not that hard. You'll need just a flathead screwdriver and a torque wrench in a hurry. Most basic-sized rooms will only take a small amount of time. If the door frame is cracked or broken, call a contractor to have it replaced, as the fix won't be easy.
